The tiny arched wall windows were the medieval way of dealing with pandemics in Tuscany. Through these arches wine and produce were sold. Today, in Florence, over 100 "buchette" have been restored to keep the historic value of the city. Some turned alive during the Covid pandemic: see the ice cream parlour of Vivoli.
